Choosing the Music for Your Wedding Film

Some songs are part of a couple’s story. They might bring back a trip, a particular evening or the time when you first met. It is natural to imagine hearing them in your wedding film too.

Talking with your videographer brings your musical tastes together with the story the footage will tell. You can choose the music by listening to suggestions and explaining what you like, without having to arrive with a complete soundtrack already planned.

Sharing your tastes through a few examples

To give the search a direction, a short selection of songs is often easier to discuss than a very long list.

It is useful to share what you do not like too. If very solemn music makes you uncomfortable, or certain sounds do not feel right for your wedding, saying so makes the videographer’s job easier.

When a song has a personal meaning, sharing its story helps your videographer understand why you would like to use it. They can consider it for the film or explore alternatives with you that share some of its qualities.

Understanding how music changes a scene

Imagine a short sequence of the wedding preparations. A gentle accompaniment can make it feel calm, while a driving rhythm can create a sense of anticipation. The images stay the same, but the impression they leave on the viewer changes.

The choice of music also depends on the footage. A song you love listening to might have transitions that feel too abrupt for an intimate scene, or lyrics that draw attention away from the words recorded during the ceremony. Your videographer considers these details while editing the film.

The shape of the whole track matters. A quiet opening might accompany the preparations, with a crescendo supporting a more intense moment, as long as it works with the images. The chorus you know by heart is only one part of that decision. Trust your videographer!

Bringing music and voices together

The sound of a wedding includes much more than songs. There are the vows, friends’ speeches and laughter during the celebrations. In the film, these sounds bring back the atmosphere of the day.

If there is a speech or a particular phrase you would like to keep, you can mention it during the planning. The edit needs to give those words enough space to be heard clearly. Instrumental music may suit some moments; in others, the volume can drop or the music can pause altogether.

Following the pace of the day

A wedding moves through different moods. The focus of the ceremony and the energy of the dance floor are unlikely to call for the same accompaniment throughout. The film can follow these changes with several tracks or with music that develops in different ways.

There is no single right number of songs for every film. Its length, the voices to include and the editing style all play a part in the choice.

The music played at the celebration can also offer inspiration, without automatically becoming the soundtrack to the film.

Agreeing on the options and when to choose

Before choosing the music, you can ask your videographer which tracks can be used and whether there are any limits on sharing the film, for example on social media. It is also helpful to agree on when to choose the songs and how any changes will be handled.

You might choose a song you have loved for years or discover a new one. Hearing it alongside your wedding footage will help you decide whether it feels right for you.

Your Union. The people you love. Your story.
